It was further proven in a court trial, during the altercation he purposely rode his horse towards the elderly woman and her dog.

As a result of the cowardly attack, his horse struck the elderly woman on the left ankle causing a serious cut and serious shock of being ran down on purpose by a horse.

On August 1st 2021 following an investigation into the assault, police located Philip John Westaway and charged him with serious assault of a person over 60.

In a trial at the Tully Courthouse on the 3rd of June 2022 Philip John Westaway was found guilty of serious assault by using his horse as a weapon on the 69 year-old woman on the beach.

Do you have to be registered to raise funds for a fireworks display https://www.missionnews.com.au/do-you-have-to-be-registered-to-raise-funds-for-a-fireworks-display/ https://www.missionnews.com.au/do-you-have-to-be-registered-to-raise-funds-for-a-fireworks-display/#respond Tue, 23 Nov 2021 11:07:13 +0000 https://www.missionnews.com.au/?p=3695

Almost everyone loves a cracker night đź’Ą however the costs are high.

One way to cover the high costs is to crowd fund the costs of the fireworks display with local businesses and even locals and leads to the question can just anyone raise funds.

Firstly, to raise funds in Queensland for a community propose you may be required to be registered under the Collections Act 1966 (The Act)

The Queensland Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Leader of the House had determined that there is no need to be registered under “The Act” to raise funds for a community fireworks display.

The Real Truth About the 2016 Australia Day Fireworks https://www.missionnews.com.au/the-real-truth-about-the-2016-australia-day-fireworks/ https://www.missionnews.com.au/the-real-truth-about-the-2016-australia-day-fireworks/#respond Wed, 28 Jul 2021 02:40:25 +0000 https://www.missionnews.com.au/?p=3556

There has been a very small number of people claim Mr Rodney F Young didn’t hold the fireworks display by Explore Mission Beach on Australia Day in 2016 to start the new business.

MBN is releasing all the evidence that Mr Young had in fact done the event from start to finish to set the record right once and for all. All the paperwork is in Mr Young’s name you may note.

One person making the false claims Mr Young didn’t do the Australia Day fireworks in 2016 to start the new business Explore Mission Beach was Philip John Westaway from formally known as Wet Hair Salon.

Here’s a link to the offical event page by Explore Mission Beach.

Around the 10th of January 2016 Mr Young started to hire a fireworks company and was seeking funds from other businesses in the area to crowd fund the costs. In two weeks the funds were raised and all the permits approved.

Below is the legal agreement to the fireworks and the invoice to Mr Rodney F Young.

Below is a email on the 25th of January 2016 showing payments of $3,248 with $300 yet to be paid by Castaways that the fireworks company was happy to get Castaways money after the event on the 26th of January 2016

Please note, a agreement was reached with Mark Jennings that the $200 from Wet Hair Salon was to be void and returned and Mackay Bananas was to take Wet Hair Salon’s place as a contributor as $200 was gifted to the crowd funding project to make the fireworks happen by Mackay Bananas.

Below is a email from Mark Jennings containing the permit to the fireworks display.

You can view a copy of the permit on the following link

On the 16th of January 2016 after declining to help put funds towards the crowd funding project, Philip John Westaway turned to Facebook basically claiming Mr Young was a scammer to the business community.

At about the same time as Philip John Westaway was defaming Mr Young on social media, Mr Young was emailing Art Print Frames as Roger gladly provided his services at no cost to design and print the official promotion of the event by Explore Mission Beach.

As you can tell Mr Young had done the event, however the false claims by a very small group of people setting up hate and defamation pages on social media and keep claiming Mr Young didn’t do the fireworks.

Philip John Westaway lies to the court https://www.missionnews.com.au/philip-john-westaway-lies-to-the-court/ https://www.missionnews.com.au/philip-john-westaway-lies-to-the-court/#comments Sat, 20 Mar 2021 05:06:25 +0000 https://www.missionnews.com.au/?p=3371 In January 2021 Philip John Westaway made a Peace and Good Behaviour complaint against Mr Rodney F Young at the Tully Courthouse claiming that between August 2020 and January 2021 Mr Young had loitered outside Philip John Westaway’s business and made threats against Philip John Westaway and his business.

This is where Philip John Westaway has completely lied to the court as Mr Young was never in Mission Beach between August 2020 and January 2021 and Philip John Westaway has effectively committed perjury that is a very serious offence where Philip John Westaway could go to jail.

This is not the only falsehood by Philip John Westaway and there is more to come about this blatant abuse of court process.

“A person can not be in two places at once”

Rodney F Young

On the 1st of April 2021 Philip John Westaway was upset Mr Young was not at court with judge stating the reason why Mr Young was not in Mission Beach as claimed by Philip John Westaway between August 2020 to January 2021 as Mr Young is unwell to travel.

On the 22nd of April the matter was mentioned at the Tully Courthouse where Mr Young had petitioned the court for mediation to settle the matter, the judge endorsed the mediation to take place.

Philip John Westaway claims he has done nothing, another lie to the court.

On the 3rd of June 2021 the matter was dismissed by the judge as Philip John Westaway failed to attend court!

On the 10th of June 2021 the matter was mentioned in the Tully Courthouse with the judge stating that he had dismissed the matter in error. The judge also noted there was no evidence of any threats made in Philip John Westaway’s application and evidence.

In court Philip John Westaway made a ridiculous false claim that Mr Young threaten his horses, this is subject of a defamation case to be filed in the courts for this total lie as no threats were ever made at all about any horses 🤥

On the 17th of June 2021 at the Tully Courthouse Philip John Westaway withdraw his complaint.

The matter is now closed!!!

Craig Tatnell Defaming Community Members https://www.missionnews.com.au/craig-tatnell-defaming-community-members/ https://www.missionnews.com.au/craig-tatnell-defaming-community-members/#respond Fri, 19 Feb 2021 13:13:58 +0000 https://www.missionnews.com.au/?p=3217 Craig Tatnell who runs Above Ground Zero Fireworks in Townsville has had a post on his Facebook business page removed for defamation by Facebook.

On the 5th of December 2019 Mr Tatnell posted defaming information about a person who had hired Above Ground Zero Fireworks to conduct a fireworks display.

Mr Tatnell even paid Facebook to promote the defaming post.

Early in February 2021 a formal defamation report was made with Facebook, with Facebook taking the quick action of removing the post for violating their Terms of Service on defamation.

In this post Mr Tatnell lied about the band U2 playing for free in Mission Beach and later admitted he had planted the fake story in a local paper.

The owner of the paper was not fooled by the lies of Mr Tatnell and in mediation the story was fully retracted about U2 playing for free in Mission Beach, as per the non-confidential agreement below.

Mr Tatnell who has now become known in the community as “Pinocchio” had also lied and was dishonest to gain a benefit over another, falsely claiming that anyone is required to be registered in order to fundraise to hold community fireworks in Queensland under the Collections Act 1966 (The Act)

The Queensland Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Leader of the House had determined that there is no need to be registered under “The Act” and full evidence community members was totally dishonest in their false claims.

This post removed by Facebook is not a isolated incident of defamation on Facebook by Mr Tatnell with a number of other posts and comment containing defamation.

Sources have it, a pending lawsuit for defamation is set to be formally lodged with the courts against Mr Tatnell in the coming weeks.

Mission Beach News has requested a comment on the record from Mr Tatnell who has refused to put a comment on the record to this date.

Will The Real Explore Mission Beach Please Stand Up – Part One https://www.missionnews.com.au/will-the-real-explore-mission-beach-please-stand-up-part-one/ https://www.missionnews.com.au/will-the-real-explore-mission-beach-please-stand-up-part-one/#respond Tue, 26 Jan 2021 05:31:35 +0000 https://www.missionnews.com.au/?p=3173 At the start of December 2020 Mission Beach Tourism Inc., a local not for profit tourism group, started using the name “Explore Mission Beach” on their Facebook page, however from 2015 the travel agency “Explore Mission Beach” was registered as a registered business by a local private company and started to claim the brand name and trademark of “Explore Mission Beach”.

How can two travel centres’ even think of using the same name and begs the question, “Will The Real Explore Mission Beach Stand Up” ❓

Mission Beach News reached out to Tropical Coast Tourism, another not for profit group in the tourism industry for a comment on the record and they refused to add a comment on the record.

What is more interesting that in 2015 Mission Beach Tourism Inc. agreed in writing, not to use the business name and claimed trademark & brand name of “Explore Mission Beach” leading to wonder why a not-for-profit group to attempt to close down the legal owner of the business name & trademark & brand name of “Explore Mission Beach” and the story becomes interesting due to several reasons.

The main issue is the new incoming president Nancy Lowe of Tropical Coast Tourism from Mission Beach Dunk Island Water Taxi & Mission Beach Dive, has been publicly defaming the real owner of “Explore Mission Beach” PMAJDT Pty Ltd, a local company owned by Mr Rodney F Young and there is where the plot thickens!!!

Firstly, Nancy Lowe in 2019 dishonesty claimed that a small new group called New Year’s Eve Association, was not registered to run as a group and fundraise for community firework on New Year’s Eve in Mission Beach to see the end of 2019 and welcome 2020, however later is proven to be dishonest information & defamation of the new group members that the Minister for Justice & Leader of the house of the Queensland Government had determined no one is required to be registered under law to fundraise for community fireworks.

After the dishonest claims Nancy Lowe started to stalk and harass the real owner of “Explore Mission Beach” Mr Young to the point police had to be called and Facebook removing several bullying and harassment posts and comments by Nancy Lowe to the point of advising Mr Young to mow his yard as the grass was long!!!

One post on Facebook by Nancy Lowe claimed Mr Young was a sick individual and people should not follow Mission Beach News, a seven year old local media outlet sharing local and world news, events  and a few jokes thrown into the mix, however what is not a joke is Nancy Lowe claiming no businesses should give Mr Young any money, basically closing down Mr Young’s business by delusions of grandeur by Nancy Lowe in believing she controls who can run and start a new business in Mission Beach and who gets money, which leads Mission Beach to believe that Nancy Lowe is dishonestly attempting at all costs to close down and ruin Mr Young, even using her powers in the local tourism centres as the president of Tropical Coast Tourism.

The Real “Explore Mission Beach, a registered business of PMAJDT Pty Ltd

Several other matters concerning Nancy Lowe, other community members and Mission Beach Tourism Inc., will be explored in the upcoming “Will The Real Explore Mission Beach Please Stand Up” part two story.

U2 – Not So Fast https://www.missionnews.com.au/u2-not-so-fast/ https://www.missionnews.com.au/u2-not-so-fast/#respond Fri, 15 Jan 2021 18:13:45 +0000 https://www.missionnews.com.au/?p=3129 In late 2019 a small number of community members had planted a fake story that U2 was playing for free in Mission Beach for New Year’s Eve in 2019.

The Queensland Government Department of Justice offers a free mediation service to deal with even very major issues of defamation on a grand scale, such as this matter. exposing the lies of a few people in an attempt to defame Mr Rodney F Young.

Cassowary Coast Independent News (CCIN) had found out the paper was totally lied too dishonestly by a small number of community member, it’s highly recommend to use this free and simple option to resolve these serious issues, that is still causing very serious harm to Mr Young.

Agreement to retract the fake story given to CCIN

Anyone still claiming that U2 was playing for free in Mission Beach for NYE last year (or anytime) doesn’t have any creditably, in fact it’s plain defamation of Mr Young.

Investigations show that one community member spreading the lies about U2 playing for free in Mission Beach was Craig Tatnell of Above Ground Zero Fireworks in Townsville.

Craig Tatnell admitting he was part of planting the fake U2 story in 2019

Mr Tatnell who has now become known in the community as “Pinocchio” had also lied and was dishonest to gain a benefit over another, falsely claiming that anyone is required to be registered in order to fundraise to hold community fireworks in Queensland under the Collections Act 1966 (The Act)

Do lies become truth, never!!! https://www.missionnews.com.au/do-lies-become-truth-never/ https://www.missionnews.com.au/do-lies-become-truth-never/#respond Sun, 03 Jan 2021 07:31:26 +0000 https://www.missionnews.com.au/?p=3063 Repetition makes a fact seem more true, regardless of whether it is or not. Understanding this effect can help you avoid falling for propaganda, says psychologist Tom Stafford.

“Repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the truth”, is a law of propaganda often attributed to the Nazi Joseph Goebbels. Among psychologists something like this known as the “illusion of truth” effect. Here’s how a typical experiment on the effect works: participants rate how true trivia items are, things like “A prune is a dried plum”. Sometimes these items are true (like that one), but sometimes participants see a parallel version which isn’t true (something like “A date is a dried plum”).

After a break – of minutes or even weeks – the participants do the procedure again, but this time some of the items they rate are new, and some they saw before in the first phase. The key finding is that people tend to rate items they’ve seen before as more likely to be true, regardless of whether they are true or not, and seemingly for the sole reason that they are more familiar.

So, here, captured in the lab, seems to be the source for the saying that if you repeat a lie often enough it becomes the truth. And if you look around yourself, you may start to think that everyone from advertisers to politicians are taking advantage of this foible of human psychology.

But a reliable effect in the lab isn’t necessarily an important effect on people’s real-world beliefs. If you really could make a lie sound true by repetition, there’d be no need for all the other techniques of persuasion.

Nazi Joseph Goebbels

One obstacle is what you already know. Even if a lie sounds plausible, why would you set what you know aside just because you heard the lie repeatedly?

Recently, a team led by Lisa Fazio of Vanderbilt University set out to test how the illusion of truth effect interacts with our prior knowledge. Would it affect our existing knowledge? They used paired true and un-true statements, but also split their items according to how likely participants were to know the truth (so “The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean on Earth” is an example of a “known” items, which also happens to be true, and “The Atlantic Ocean is the largest ocean on Earth” is an un-true item, for which people are likely to know the actual truth).

Their results show that the illusion of truth effect worked just as strongly for known as for unknown items, suggesting that prior knowledge won’t prevent repetition from swaying our judgements of plausibility.

To cover all bases, the researchers performed one study in which the participants were asked to rate how true each statement seemed on a six-point scale, and one where they just categorised each fact as “true” or “false”. Repetition pushed the average item up the six-point scale, and increased the odds that a statement would be categorised as true. For statements that were actually fact or fiction, known or unknown, repetition made them all seem more believable.

At first this looks like bad news for human rationality, but – and I can’t emphasise this strongly enough – when interpreting psychological science, you have to look at the actual numbers.

What Fazio and colleagues actually found, is that the biggest influence on whether a statement was judged to be true was… whether it actually was true. The repetition effect couldn’t mask the truth. With or without repetition, people were still more likely to believe the actual facts as opposed to the lies.

This shows something fundamental about how we update our beliefs â€“ repetition has a power to make things sound more true, even when we know differently, but it doesn’t over-ride that knowledge

The next question has to be, why might that be? The answer is to do with the effort it takes to being rigidly logical about every piece of information you hear. If every time you heard something you assessed it against everything you already knew, you’d still be thinking about breakfast at supper-time. Because we need to make quick judgements, we adopt shortcuts – heuristics which are right more often than wrong. Relying on how often you’ve heard something to judge how truthful something feels is just one strategy. Any universe where truth gets repeated more often than lies, even if only 51% vs 49% will be one where this is a quick and dirty rule for judging facts.

If repetition was the only thing that influenced what we believed we’d be in trouble, but it isn’t. We can all bring to bear more extensive powers of reasoning, but we need to recognise they are a limited resource. Our minds are prey to the illusion of truth effect because our instinct is to use short-cuts in judging how plausible something is. Often this works. Sometimes it is misleading.

Once we know about the effect we can guard against it. Part of this is double-checking why we believe what we do â€“ if something sounds plausible is it because it really is true, or have we just been told that repeatedly? This is why scholars are so mad about providing references – so we can track the origin on any claim, rather than having to take it on faith.

But part of guarding against the illusion is the obligation it puts on us to stop repeating falsehoods. We live in a world where the facts matter, and should matter. If you repeat things without bothering to check if they are true, you are helping to make a world where lies and truth are easier to confuse. So, please, think before you repeat.

Christopher Lawrence guilty of common assault & assault causing bodily harm https://www.missionnews.com.au/christopher-lawrence-guilty-of-common-assault-assault-causing-bodily-harm/ https://www.missionnews.com.au/christopher-lawrence-guilty-of-common-assault-assault-causing-bodily-harm/#respond Fri, 18 Dec 2020 08:06:24 +0000 https://www.missionnews.com.au/?p=3020 Christopher Lawrence of Mission Beach was found guilty in the Tully Courthouse last week for common assault & assault causing bodily harm and received 150 hours community service for a serious act of violence at his sentencing.

This sentence by the judge at Tully Courthouse shows how poor our justice system is in punishing people committing serious offences of violence against other community members.

Mr Lawrence seriously attacked a person for taking photos of the rubbish left over from a event holder for new year’s eve that is required to not have glass in a event area and illegal discharge of emergency flares in the event area.

Other photos taken were of illegal drinking in a public area during the NYE event last year, run by Hilary Watson and Philip-Jon Westaway as discovered as the organisers of a event page on Facebook.

Why the photos of rubbish on the beach and in the event area have anything to do with Mr Lawrence is anyone’s guess.

Mr Lawrence pleaded guilty to the serious charges of attacking another community member in David Street on new year’s day this year.

There was false claims on social media by unknown community members that the attack never had taken place and there was no evidence, however what the unknown person/s making the false claim it didn’t know, video evidence shows the serious attack by Mr Lawrence had in fact seriously assaulted another community member in David Street after attempts to steal the victims phone were unsuccessful in the first attempt.

The justice system is very weak in only community service for serious acts of violence and attempting to change the course of a serious investigation by unknown people on social media.

Mission Beach News has requested all evidence, including CCTV that shows how serious the attack was by Mr Lawrence. Mr Lawrence is also facing other assault charges on a very well liked member of the Mission Beach community.

More on this other serious attack on another community at a later date as that attack is before the courts and may interfere with a ongoing investigation.

Do you think a serious act of violence causing bodily harm should receive a mandatory jail sentence âť“

The Queensland Attorney-General has been asked to review the poor sentence and any possible appeal for this cowardly attack on new year’s day for the charges laid were adequate, given the CCTV footage shows premeditation in Mr Lawrence’s serious criminal actions in planning to disguise himself.

There is many community members in Mission Beach, that believe a act of violence should be rewarded and is entertaining, that is very sad for Mission Beach to be known for this kind of behaviour and makes out attacking people is acceptable behaviour when it is far from acceptable and downright idiotic.

If anyone knows of any other criminal behaviour committed by Mr Lawrence, please report it to the police or Crimestoppers, this person is an unacceptable risk to our community.
